Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Miami, Ethridge studied photography at the Atlanta College of Art, earning a BFA in 1995. After moving to New York in 1997, Ethridge began working commercially and had a first New York solo exhibition in 1998.
The useful accident.
A beauty assignment helped bring the two sides of the practice together: a laughing model with chapped lips made an outtake worth keeping. Instead of separating commissioned images from personal work, Ethridge began letting them speak to each other. That approach reached MoMA PS1’s Greater New York in 2000; a pigeon photograph appeared on Artforum’s cover in 2003.
Pictures in conversation.
The work moves between portraits, fashion, ordinary objects, and found imagery. MoMA’s New Photography 2010 presented this approach through photographs that gain meaning from their sequence and reuse. Ethridge’s books offer another way to follow those connections, including American Polychronic (MACK, 2022).
The current chapter.
The 2026 book Rude in the Good Way combines studio experiments, fashion photographs, still lifes, and intimate portraits made with collaborator Lulu Sylbert. In the Beginning returns to three self-published books from 2004–05: County Line, Orange Grove, and Spare Bedroom.
