Mini bio
How it started.
Sallie grew up in Charleston and studied journalism at UNC. In a Mic interview, she recalled wanting to write, then choosing a Wall Street job over an offer to write obituaries in Florida. She expected finance to be a short stop before business journalism. It became a career.
Finding a voice.
Her path took her from Salomon Brothers to research and leadership at Sanford Bernstein, then to senior roles including Citigroup CFO and CEO of Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Ellevest’s biography notes that Fortune called her “The Last Honest Analyst.” Her public voice grew around the same questions she faced at work: who gets heard, who gets served and who gets to build wealth.
Building for women.
Founded in 2014, Ellevest grew out of the gap between women’s financial lives and the services available to them. Its approach considered factors such as career breaks, earnings and longer lifespans. Sallie brought that mission to readers in Own It in 2017 and to learners through a course on thoughtful risk-taking.
The next chapter.
In December 2024, Sallie announced that she was stepping aside as Ellevest CEO to focus on her health and would continue in a board role. In August 2026, she joined Duolingo’s board as an independent director, bringing her finance and operating experience to the learning company.
