Mini bio

How it started.

Before newsletters and microphones, Sam ran Southern Sam’s, a hot dog business in Nashville while attending Belmont University on a track and field scholarship. In 2012, Sam co-founded the roommate-matching startup Bunk, which Apartment List acquired the following year.

Finding a voice.

Sam started Hustle Con in 2014 to meet entrepreneurs and explore ideas. Funny, useful emails helped bring people to the conference, and writing became the heart of the business. The Hustle’s daily business newsletter launched in 2016; by the time HubSpot acquired the company in 2021, it had more than 1.5 million readers.

Conversations that travel.

Sam became a My First Million co-host alongside Shaan Puri, mixing business ideas with interviews and company breakdowns. The Hustle also launched Trends, a paid research product, in 2019. On Moneywise, Sam has asked founders to open up about their finances and the personal questions that come with wealth.

Building a place for peers.

Sam and Joe Speiser founded Hampton in 2022 and launched it publicly on March 28, 2023. The community brings founders together for peer support and practical advice. Sam now also writes a weekly personal letter about business, family, fitness and lessons from conversations.
