Mini bio
How it started.
Sanam grew up around the shrine music of Sindh and Punjab. As a child she sang alongside her father, Faqir Ghulam Rasool, and later studied with Ustad Fateh Ali Khan of the Gwalior tradition. That grounding in classical music still shapes her interpretations of folk and Sufi poetry.
Finding her audience.
A 2009 appearance on PTV’s Virsa Heritage brought her a national audience. She joined Coke Studio in 2010 and became a returning voice on the series, recording both solo performances and collaborations.
Taking the poetry further.
She sings in Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi and Saraiki, drawing on a repertoire of Sufi, ghazal, qawwali and folk songs. Her international appearances include the Fes Festival of Sacred Music and a 2017 United States tour with Center Stage. Tanya Panjwani’s documentary Marvi: The Mystic Muse follows her musical journey and the shrines that inform it.
