Mini bio

How it started.

At Spinnaker Software in 1983, Seth worked on educational computer games and with authors including Arthur C. Clarke and Michael Crichton. In 1986, he left to start Seth Godin Productions, a book-packaging business run from a New York studio apartment.

Finding a different way to market.

Seth founded Yoyodyne, which Yahoo! acquired in 1998. His 1999 book Permission Marketing argued for earning a customer’s invitation to communicate. Purple Cow followed in 2003, making the case for products people want to talk about.

Books that became conversations.

Tribes explores how people gather around ideas; Linchpin looks at bringing initiative and creativity to work. This Is Marketing asks readers to understand the people they hope to serve. Alongside the books, Seth keeps publishing a daily blog.

Teaching through projects.

Seth created the altMBA in 2015 and became founding editor of the all-volunteer Carbon Almanac. His more recent work includes This Is Strategy, The Knot and physical Prompt Decks that open AI conversations. The thread through these projects is helping readers move from an idea to something they can do.

At Spinnaker, Seth was a Macintosh beta tester and remembers being the only person in the office with a Mac.
He designed and self-published What To Do When It’s Your Turn.
His June 2026 food list says he steams 100% cacao with oat milk, then shakes it over ice.
