Mini bio

How it started.

Simon was born in London and studied philosophy, politics and economics at Trinity College, Oxford. His early journalism career involved editing magazines about finance, banking and law, and he later became head of product strategy at Euromoney. Permanent Style began as a hobby alongside that work.

Finding his readers.

He founded Permanent Style in 2007 to bring more substantial writing to menswear. Its audience grew through word of mouth, with readers coming for advice on bespoke tailoring, clothing quality and the people making it. By 2016, Esquire had included him in its top 10 most influential men in fashion.

From advice to making things.

In 2010, Simon began collaborating with makers on clothes and accessories. His books carry the same interest in practical detail: Bespoke Style compares the work of 25 tailors, while The Casual Style Guide pairs street photography with observations from Simon and photographer Jamie Ferguson.

A new chapter in print.

Permanent Style’s first magazine arrived in March 2025. Simon continues to lead its editorial work, writing and commissioning stories. His wider journalism has included contributions to the Financial Times’ How To Spend It, Robb Report and The Rake.

Trivia

  1. Bespoke Style grew from a project begun in 2016, photographing different tailors’ suits in consistent studio conditions so readers could compare them.
  2. The Casual Style Guide is organised around five ways of dressing: Western, Ivy, workwear, tonal and English country.
  3. Simon says wearing smart tailoring originally appealed partly because his colleagues did not wear it.
