Mini bio
How it started.
Klein grew up in Rhode Island and studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. He turned toward photography in Paris in the 1990s. He has credited Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani with giving him room to experiment.
The pictures people remember.
His 1999 Fight Club portfolio with Brad Pitt became an early landmark. For W’s 2005 Domestic Bliss, Pitt and Angelina Jolie played a suburban couple in a staged family story. With Madonna, Klein created X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS in 2003, spanning photographs, a video installation, and a book. He later directed Lady Gaga’s Alejandro video.

His work also lives in museum collections, including the V&A, the National Portrait Gallery, and the International Center of Photography. His 2022 Phaidon monograph gathered magazine photographs into a retrospective, followed by Steven Klein Vogue in 2025.
