Mini bio

How it started.

Saif Samejo and Naeem Shah began making music as university students in 2003. Based in Jamshoro, they drew on Sufi poetry and influences including Junoon and Vital Signs. Their debut album, Dastkari, followed in 2010.

Finding a wider audience.

Their rendition of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s “Mand Waai” on Coke Studio season 4 brought the band wider recognition in 2011. Sindhi language and poetry remain central to the music they share on their official channel.

Songs across languages.

Their second album, You, came out in 2016, drawing inspiration from shrine culture and including songs in Sindhi, Urdu, Saraiki and other languages. Saanjhi followed in 2019, with Samejo on vocals, lyrics and composition, Nomi Ali handling arrangements and Nepal’s Umesh Pandit contributing flute.

Beyond the albums.

The Sketches made music for Asim Abbasi’s 2018 film Cake. Alongside the band, Samejo developed Lahooti Live Sessions and the Lahooti Music Aashram to help preserve and share indigenous music.
