Mini bio
How it started.
Yungen grew up in Herne Hill, South London, surrounded by the R&B his three older sisters played. An older cousin who MCed helped spark the urge to rap. Early recordings were homemade: in a Line of Best Fit interview, Yungen remembered using a small tape recorder before working up the confidence to record in a Brixton studio.
Finding an audience.
A 2010 YouTube cover of Adele’s “Hometown Glory” was an early step. Yungen later told House of Solo that the response to the 2011 SBTV freestyle made a music career feel possible. Working around Krept & Konan in the Play Dirty circle pushed the standards higher. Project Black & Red followed in 2014, and a MOBO Best Newcomer nomination arrived in 2015.
The breakthrough.
“Bestie”, made with Yxng Bane, became the crossover moment. It climbed from No. 67 to No. 10 on the UK Official Singles Chart in 2017. Yungen told Official Charts that the song came from having fun with a friend in the studio. Further collaborations included “Mind On It” with Jess Glynne and “Intimate” with Craig David.
More of the story.
Project Purple arrived in 2019, followed by the mixtape Passionate & Paranoid in 2022. Speaking about the latter ahead of release, Yungen said music helped express experiences that were difficult to explain elsewhere. The catalogue pairs those reflective projects with standalone singles and freestyle appearances, including a second Fire in the Booth session in 2025.
