Mini bio

How it started.

Raised in Tickhill near Doncaster, McLellan started by photographing friends. Music magazines and record sleeves offered a way into a world they wanted to join. One early image, of their friend Daniel in a field in 1987, became the opening photograph of Home and Away.

Finding an audience.

Their work became a regular presence in i-D during the 2000s. McLellan also began documenting the people around Palace when the skate brand launched in 2009, building a continuing portrait of its skaters and friends.

A world across books and film.

Ultimate Clothing Company, their first book, appeared in 2013 and explored British masculinity through Doncaster. Ceremony followed in 2016 with photographs of British ceremonial troops. In 2021, McLellan directed the Saint Etienne companion film I’ve Been Trying to Tell You; Home and Away gathered decades of photographs into two volumes in 2023.

Still connected to home.

Alongside editorial work and campaigns for houses including Miu Miu and Burberry, McLellan keeps returning to familiar British places. Scotland, a Louis Vuitton Fashion Eye book, grew from family visits and their father’s attachment to Scottish culture.
