Mini bio

A childhood full of cookbooks.

Alex grew up in New York with cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli as her mother. Family meals followed the books Maria was editing, giving Alex an early introduction to food from many places.

Learning in restaurant kitchens.

After training at La Varenne in Burgundy, Alex worked at Guy Savoy in Paris for four years and later cooked at Daniel in New York. In 2003, becoming executive chef at Butter gave Alex room to build an American menu around local ingredients.

From judging to Iron Chef.

Alex became a familiar face at the Chopped judging table and won The Next Iron Chef: Redemption in 2012, defeating Amanda Freitag in the final. That win earned Alex the Iron Chef title. Hosting Supermarket Stakeout and competing on Alex vs America brought different sides of that kitchen experience to television.

Family cooking, shared.

Cook It Up, written with daughter Ava Clark, arrived in 2023. Italian American Forever followed in 2024, collecting the comforting Italian American dishes Alex grew up with. In 2025, Alex added a YouTube channel and Substack to share recipes and personal writing directly with fans.
