How it started.
Alphonso grew up drawing in Jamaica and moved to the United States at 17. He studied chemistry at William Paterson University with medicine in mind, then followed his interest in art to an MFA at the New York Academy of Art.
Finding his audience.
After graduate school, he taught high school chemistry and college art. His free YouTube tutorials brought his teaching to a wider audience, covering pen and ink, watercolor, perspective, anatomy and urban sketching.
From lessons to books.
He published Pen & Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide in 2015 and followed it with Pen & Ink Drawing Workbook in 2018. The guide explains materials, strokes, shading and texture; the workbook gives readers exercises to put those ideas into practice.
