Mini bio

How it started.

Before becoming a professor, Amy worked as chief engineer for architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller. She later directed research at Pecos River Learning Centers, working on organizational change, and earned her graduate degrees at Harvard.

The surprise that shaped her work.

As a doctoral student studying hospital teams, Amy expected stronger teamwork to go with fewer medical errors. Instead, better teams had more reported errors. The finding led her to examine whether those teams were more willing to talk about mistakes, opening a path into her research on psychological safety.

Ideas you can use.

Amy joined Harvard Business School in 1996. Her books and talks bring questions about teamwork and learning to a wider audience. The Fearless Organization focuses on workplaces where people can speak up; Right Kind of Wrong explores how to learn from failure. The latter won the 2023 Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year award.
