How it started.
Before websites became the day job, Andy trained as a teacher and worked as an IT recruiter. They wanted work that brought creativity and technology together, and joined a high school friend who was already building websites. Orbit Media was founded in Chicago in 2001.
Finding an audience.
The blog and newsletter began in 2007 as a way to stay in touch through long sales cycles. In a later interview, Andy described a concentrated stretch of guest writing in 2012 and 2013 that helped build the site’s authority. Teaching became central to the work through articles, videos and conference talks.
From an article to a book.
Andy’s periodic table of content was an early success: a science-themed explanation of turning one piece of content into other formats. That response helped shape the chemistry theme of Content Chemistry. The illustrated handbook reached its seventh edition in September 2024.
Beyond the screen.
Andy also helped found Chicago Cause, which supports local nonprofits with digital marketing services. Away from marketing, their official biography lists scuba diving, piano, architecture and volunteering as an Openlands Treekeeper among their interests.
