Before the videos, Átila taught biology at a community preparatory course. Working with adult students helped him learn how to make scientific ideas understandable. He went on to study biology and microbiology at the University of São Paulo and carry out postdoctoral research at Yale.
From blogs to videos.
In a 2013 SciELO interview, he dated his Rainha Vermelha blog to 2007 and described his research on HIV evolution. He also helped create ScienceBlogs Brasil. From 2013 to 2021, he presented Nerdologia, bringing science into conversations about pop culture.
A wider audience.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, his livestreams brought virology and public health questions to a much wider audience. He appeared on Roda Viva on 30 March 2020 and began a Folha de S.Paulo column that April.
Following the questions.
His later work includes TV Cultura’s Hiperconectado, which debuted in June 2022, and the interview podcast Não Ficção. His current YouTube videos range from biology and nutrition to AI, energy and the social effects of technology.
