Mini bio

How it started.

Austin grew up in Irvine, California, before moving to Taiwan at age 10. Biology at Duke led him toward medicine, and he earned his MD at Columbia. His interest in how patients encountered medical information helped draw him to Twitter, where he shared what he learned at conferences.

Finding his audience.

He kept posting despite early skepticism from colleagues and became an early medical voice on TikTok. At Jefferson Health, he took on the chief medical social media officer role in 2018. He also helped create the Association for Healthcare Social Media to support health professionals communicating online.

From videos to a book.

In October 2021, Austin became the first chief medical officer of Medtronic’s Endoscopy business. He also serves as an associate professor of medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. His 2024 book, Gut: An Owner’s Guide, brings his plain-language approach to digestive anatomy, everyday questions and common misconceptions.
