Learning in public.
Before cooking became his work, Barry was a quantity surveyor who lacked confidence in the kitchen. Watching Jamie Oliver poach an egg prompted him to pick up a camcorder and try it himself. His first My Virgin Kitchen video was poached egg on toast, with the learning process there for everyone to see.
From viewer to collaborator.
The chef who inspired him became part of the story. Jamie Oliver noticed Barry’s videos, and Barry became a regular on Food Tube. He went on to publish Dinner’s On! in 2014 and My Virgin Kitchen in 2017, bringing his approach to everyday family cooking into two books.
Room to experiment.
The channel now mixes recipes with taste tests, gadget reviews and experiments such as transparent ketchup. Stuart Ashen is a returning collaborator, and Barry also co-hosted Stonkin’ Foodcast with Alec Plowman. In February 2025, he wrote about moving filming into a purpose-built garden kitchen and starting relaxed recipe livestreams.
