Mini bio

How it started.

Benn began with guitar and keyboards. In a 2014 interview, he remembered a childhood Casio SK-1, then a drum machine, sampler and borrowed karaoke machine that let him build tracks by swapping tapes.

Finding an audience.

The Flashbulb’s M³ brought an international following, followed by releases that moved between intricate electronic rhythms and melodic instrumental music. After Sublight closed, Benn released Soundtrack to a Vacant Life through his own label, Alphabasic, in January 2008. He also seeded the album on file-sharing networks with a message inviting listeners to support it.

Music beyond the album.

His work includes the music used in Dove’s Evolution advertisement and original scores for Adler Planetarium shows Cosmic Wonder and Planet Nine. The Planet Nine score began with modular and analog synthesis for the theater’s surround sound system.

From gear to bigger questions.

Benn said he started Benn and Gear while making Piety of Ashes after moving to Georgia, using gear reviews as a reason to speak to a camera. The channel grew into experiments and investigations, including bird vocalizations, infrasound and the privacy questions surrounding surveillance cameras.
