Mini bio
How it started.
Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney met at a Nashville house party on December 7, 2012. They sang together into the early morning and wrote a song the next day. Neither had planned to form a duo, but their voices blended naturally. That first song was put on hold for Rascal Flatts, giving them a reason to keep writing together.
Finding their audience.
“19 You + Me” introduced their mix of country storytelling and pop melody. Their debut album, Where It All Began, arrived in 2014 and entered Billboard’s country albums chart at number one. In 2018, their self-titled album and “Tequila” took them to the top of the country album and airplay charts together.
Songs fans make their own.
“Tequila,” “Speechless” and their Justin Bieber collaboration “10,000 Hours” won Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys in three consecutive years, from 2019 through 2021. Their songs about lasting love became part of wedding celebrations, while their harmonies carried them between country and pop audiences.
A friendship worth rebuilding.
Before Bigger Houses, they reached a breaking point and nearly ended the duo. Making more room for their health, families and friendship helped them find their love of music again. The 2023 album grew out of that return to writing together with acoustic guitar and piano.
Where they are now.
In 2024, they shared a double chair as The Voice’s first coaching duo. On Young in 2026, they turned further toward stories from their own lives: family, faith, grief and growing older. Dan co-produced the record with longtime collaborator Scott Hendricks.
