Mini bio

How it started.

Daniel grew up in Stockton with two college teachers as parents. After Amherst and study at Berkeley, he trained in clinical psychology at Harvard. Research in India and Sri Lanka deepened his interest in meditation. A job at Psychology Today took him into journalism; he joined The New York Times in 1984.

The book that changed his path.

Emotional Intelligence appeared in 1995 and spent a year and a half on The New York Times bestseller list. Its success brought so many speaking invitations that Daniel left the newspaper to concentrate on the book’s ideas. He helped co-found CASEL to bring social and emotional learning into education.

Still asking questions.

His later collaborations connect emotional intelligence with leadership and meditation. Optimal, written with Cary Cherniss, explores sustaining good performance without burnout. His recent newsletters ask how people can keep developing empathy, judgment and relationships as AI changes work.
