Mini bio

How it started.

Dave grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, and went to Wagner College in Staten Island, where he played baseball. After college, he moved home and began working in Boston. His early career included a PR agency, Constant Contact and HubSpot before he grew into marketing leadership at Drift.

Finding his voice.

At Drift, Dave became VP of Marketing and later Chief Brand Officer. He co-wrote Conversational Marketing with founder David Cancel in 2019. He also served as CMO at Privy. His 2022 book Founder Brand turns the idea of making a founder’s story part of a company’s marketing into a practical guide.

Building a place for marketers.

His community began as DGMG, short for Dave Gerhardt Marketing Group. In 2022, he announced the name Exit Five as the project grew beyond his own marketing opinions. The name comes from the Vermont highway exit his family took to visit his in-laws, a place where walks, hiking and time away from work helped him find ideas. Today, Exit Five brings together a community, newsletter, podcast and in-person events.
