Mini bio

How it started.

Derek’s interest in clothes grew around high-school friends who collected vintage Ralph Lauren. Wanting to dress well for a wedding helped turn that curiosity toward tailoring. Menswear blogs and forums followed, then a Tumblr called Die, Workwear! around 2010.

The breakout.

In late 2022, an exchange about Dave Portnoy’s watches and an explainer on cashmere brought new readers. Twitter’s For You feed then carried Derek’s posts far beyond the menswear crowd, making the account familiar to people who had never sought out clothing advice.

What fans come for.

Die, Workwear! pairs practical wardrobe ideas with the cultural history of clothing. Alongside the blog, Derek edits Put This On and writes for other publications. In September 2025, Derek reported a combined audience of more than two million across three social platforms.

Recognition.

The Business of Fashion included Derek in its BoF 500 Class of 2024, recognising the writer’s menswear commentary in its media category.
