Mini bio
How it started.
A Netflix documentary about a South American chef drew Derek into fire cooking while he was putting off college work. A fire pit received as a wedding gift gave him and Ally a place to try it. Their first meal was skirt steak with homemade chimichurri.
Finding his people.
Derek and Ally launched Over the Fire Cooking in 2016. Their Instagram began as a record of backyard experiments for friends and family, then grew into a community as other cooks sent in their own photos and videos.
From the backyard to the bookshelf.
Food by Fire arrived in 2021, followed by Flavor by Fire in 2022. Alongside the books, Derek develops recipes and spice blends with Spiceology. His cooking draws on barbecue and traditions across the Americas.
