Mini bio

How it started.

Donald began publishing books about faith and everyday life before becoming known for business advice. His first book, Prayer and the Art of Volkswagen Maintenance, appeared in 2000 and was later republished as Through Painted Deserts. Blue Like Jazz followed in 2003 and became his first New York Times bestseller.

Living a story.

Working on a film adaptation of Blue Like Jazz prompted Donald to think about the shape of his own life. In A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, he explored that idea through experiences including hiking the Inca Trail and bicycling across the country.

From memoir to messaging.

Donald brought storytelling principles into business with Building a StoryBrand in 2017. Today, as StoryBrand’s founder and CEO, he teaches businesses to make their customers the hero and explain how they can help. His books, podcast and speaking work turn that approach into practical exercises.
