Mini bio

How it started.

Dorie grew up in a small North Carolina town and left home for college at 14. She graduated from Smith College at 18 and later earned a Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School. Her early work included political reporting, serving as a presidential campaign spokesperson, nonprofit leadership and documentary filmmaking.

Finding her subject.

She launched her marketing strategy consulting business in 2006. Reinventing You, her first book, arrived in 2013, followed by Stand Out in 2015. Those books turned career change and making your ideas heard into central themes of her work. Stand Out was named Inc.’s top leadership book of 2015.

Playing the long game.

Entrepreneurial You followed in 2017, exploring how to build income from your expertise. The Long Game arrived in 2021 with a focus on making space for goals that take time. Alongside her books, Dorie shares advice through courses, newsletters and interviews.

Another kind of writing.

After seeing Fun Home in January 2016, Dorie decided to learn to write musical theater. She trained as a lyricist in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. With composer Marie Incontrera, she wrote Absolute Zero, a musical thriller whose songs were performed at 54 Below in September 2025.
