Mini bio
How it started.
Melissa studied psychology and art history at the University of Maryland, College Park. Working as a unit secretary and nursing assistant in a cardiac ICU helped her decide to pursue medicine. At medical school, she discovered that psychiatry offered the patient connection she wanted.
Learning to care.
She trained at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, then completed her psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins, serving as chief resident in her fourth year. Her work there included suicide prevention research in Parkinson’s disease and an online psychiatric treatment curriculum for medical students.
Finding her audience.
After her sisters introduced her to TikTok, she started posting in early 2020. Her first video used a stethoscope to swat away mental health misconceptions. By April 2021, she had nearly a million followers. Answering viewers’ questions became a central part of her work.
Making room for being human.
Her free resources grew from mental health explainers into a more personal conversation with her audience. She brings self-compassion to topics such as ADHD and overwhelm, including stories from her own life alongside educational videos and writing.
