Mini bio
How it started.
Gemma grew up baking with her mum in Wexford, Ireland. Apple crumble was among the first dishes she learned from memory. She trained at Cathal Brugha before taking the certificate course at Ballymaloe in 2003, then worked in kitchens around the world.
Finding the Bold Bakers.
After years as a professional chef, Gemma wanted to share the recipes and shortcuts she had collected. Bigger Bolder Baking began in 2014, co-founded with her husband, Kevin Kurtz. Microwave mug cakes became a signature: she identifies her five-flavor mug cake video as the one that started that part of her work. In her Cherry Bombe interview, she also recalled homemade ice cream as an early viral success.

Her books followed in 2019 and 2022, bringing her approach to everyday desserts onto the page. She has also been a guest judge on Nailed It!, Best Baker in America, and Baker’s Dozen, and co-created the Knead To Know baking podcast. In 2026, GemmaMade brought her kitchen tools and Irish scones to QVC.
