Mini bio
How it started.
Ian grew up in Carmichael, near Sacramento. He and Anthony Padilla started making videos during the summer between high school and community college in 2005. In a Sactown interview, Ian recalled discovering YouTube after someone else uploaded one of their videos. Free video hosting gave them a reason to start posting there themselves.
Finding their audience.
Their Pokémon theme lip-sync became a breakout hit, and Smosh grew into sketch series including Food Battle and If It Were Real. Ian also created the IanH channel, which later became Smosh Pit. Their work expanded into films, including Smosh: The Movie and Ghostmates.
Keeping Smosh going.
Ian stayed with Smosh after Anthony left in 2017 and through parent company Defy Media’s collapse in 2018. Mythical bought the company in 2019. In June 2023, Ian and Anthony reunited to buy Smosh back. Today, the independent company makes scripted and unscripted comedy, podcasts and live shows with an ensemble cast.
