Mini bio

How it started.

James began university studying computer science, then realised that cooking mattered more to them than code. They left that course and changed universities to study cooking full time. James later graduated from University College Birmingham with a first-class BA (Hons) in 2012.

Finding an audience.

Having met Ben Ebbrell at culinary school, James joined Sorted Food around 2014, first working on recipe development and later appearing on camera. Cooking battles and gadget reviews became familiar places to see James’s skills and direct opinions.

Teaching and collaborations.

James brought home bread-making experience to a Workshop course covering white and wholemeal loaves, focaccia and brioche. In 2018, James and Jamie Spafford also appeared in Bon Appétit’s Food Film School to review popular internet food videos.

A path beyond the studio.

James left the regular Sorted Food lineup in May 2021 for other cooking work. The official team page now describes regular returns alongside other professional projects. In July 2025, Sorted Sidekick announced new recipes written by James, while cooking challenges and gadget tests continued on YouTube.
