The pub kitchen.
Jamie’s love of cooking began at eight, helping at The Cricketers, the pub and restaurant run by the family in Clavering, Essex. Catering college came next, followed by work at the Neal Street Restaurant, where Gennaro Contaldo became a mentor and helped deepen Jamie’s love of Italian food.
The breakthrough.
A move to the River Café led to a TV producer spotting Jamie. The Naked Chef arrived in 1999, with a television series and first cookbook built around making cooking feel approachable. The book’s recipes are still collected on Jamie’s website.
Beyond the recipe.
Jamie’s School Dinners in 2005 made school food a central part of the work. Ministry of Food followed in 2008, taking cooking skills into communities. The 2010 TED Prize recognised Jamie’s efforts to change how children eat.
Still finding new ways to teach.
The work now spans recipe videos, books and television. Recent projects include Eat Yourself Healthy, 20 Minute Meals and a TikTok series teaching cooking basics. Jamie has also used a documentary and personal writing to call for better support for dyslexic children.
