Mini bio

How it started.

Joanna studied creative writing at the University of Alberta, then built a career in copywriting. In 2010, while working at Intuit, Joanna gave a startup founder feedback on his website. The founder shared the help on Hacker News, bringing requests from more than 50 other founders.

The first books.

Those requests became copywriting ebooks, launched on Hacker News in 2011. Joanna recalls $20,000 in sales and an early purchase from HubSpot cofounder Dharmesh Shah. That response led to Copyhackers, a place to teach startups how to find their message by listening to customers.

Teaching the craft.

Copy School grew into a library of conversion copywriting courses taught by Joanna and other specialists. Alongside teaching, Joanna has written for brands including Shopify, Huel, Buffer and Wistia, and spoken at Business of Software, CXL Live, CTA Conf and MicroConf.

A fiction shelf, too.

Joanna also writes fiction. The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant appeared in 2014, followed by The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant in 2015. The Copyselling System, published in July 2026, brings the customer-centered approach to marketing into book form.
