Mini bio

How it started.

Joe learned the business of creating content for brands at Cleveland publisher Penton Media. He left in 2007 and began blogging while developing Junta42, a service that matched brands with content agencies. The service struggled, but readers kept asking for training, consulting, and an event.

Listening changed the business.

Those requests helped shape Content Marketing Institute, launched in May 2010. The first Content Marketing World followed in Cleveland in September 2011. Joe recalls hoping for 100 to 150 attendees and getting 660. He sold CMI in 2016.

Books and conversations.

Content Inc. explains how to build an audience before creating products for it. Epic Content Marketing returned in a 2023 edition written with Brian Piper. Joe also ventured into fiction with the 2020 small-town mystery The Will to Die. Since 2013, Joe and Robert Rose have co-hosted This Old Marketing.

What matters now.

Joe’s current writing explores meaning, ownership, and freedom. Alongside that work, Joe and Pam founded the Orange Effect Foundation, which helps children access speech therapy and communication equipment. The foundation’s story grew from their own family’s experience with early intervention.
