Mini bio

How it started.

Hank Green found James Weiss through a video of a dying Blepharisma ciliate. He proposed a channel combining Weiss’s microscopy, his own narration and Andrew Huang’s music. The working title was The Germ House. Developed with Complexly, it launched as Journey to the Microcosmos on June 24, 2019.

A world worth watching.

The channel pairs close observation of tiny organisms with reflective science storytelling. Deboki Chakravarti joined the narration alongside Hank Green. This Ciliate Is About to Die became a widely watched example of that approach, drawing more than 2.6 million YouTube views. The team also brought microscopy into fans’ homes through a crowdfunded microscope project.

Where the journey stands.

In April 2024, Green said the show could no longer be made sustainably. The narrated series concluded that October. Its quieter side continued through Infinite Microcosmos streams, whose descriptions credit Weiss’s footage and Huang’s music.
