Mini bio
How it started.
Khumariyaan grew out of jams between Farhan Bogra, Aamer Shafiq and Shiraz Khan in Peshawar in 2008. Sparlay Rawail joined after an impromptu session at a concert, and the quartet took shape in 2009. Their mix of rubab, guitars and percussion made space for Pashtun traditions in a contemporary band.
A wider audience.
Their international debut came on the 2014 Center Stage US tour. In 2018, Coke Studio brought their sound to more listeners through “Rasha Mama” with Zarsanga and Gul Panrra, followed by “Ya Qurban”. The latter won Song of the Year at the 2019 Lux Style Awards.
The band today.
After years as an instrumental act, they welcomed vocalist and guitarist Obaid Khan in 2024. Alongside Bogra, Rawail, Shafiq and Khan, he helps extend their work from preserving instruments to sharing the languages of their region. Recent work includes a 2025 US tour and “Yaduna”, an original Pashto song with a video filmed in Yellowstone.
