Mini bio

Learning at home.

Born and raised in Korea, Maangchi learned from family, friends and food vendors. Her teaching keeps that home-cooking spirit: detailed recipes and techniques that readers can bring into their own kitchens.

How it started.

In April 2007, while living in Toronto, she filmed spicy stir-fried squid with a small point-and-shoot camera. She says she posted it for fun. Requests for written recipe details led her to build maangchi.com, a place for recipes and conversation among food lovers.

From videos to books.

Her growing audience led to three small self-published cookbooks, followed by Maangchi’s Real Korean Cooking in 2015 and Maangchi’s Big Book of Korean Cooking in 2019. The New York Times profiled her in 2015. Her second major cookbook reaches into temple cuisine, street food and lunchboxes.

Around a shared table.

Alongside individual recipes, her Real Korean Cooking Stories series shows meals with relatives, friends and neighbors in Korea. The eight-part series, filmed during a 2015 visit and concluded online in May 2025, gives fans a closer look at how dishes come together at a shared table.
