Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Naples in 1971, Mario moved to New York at ten. He later went to London to model, while pursuing photography through books, study, and constant picture-taking. He met Kate Moss on a modeling job in 1991, and their everyday life together became the subject of his photographs.
The photographs that opened doors.
Those personal pictures helped lead to Calvin Klein’s 1993 Obsession campaign with Moss. The campaign brought Mario’s intimate approach to a much wider audience. His early portraits later became Kate, first published by Phaidon in 2018 and reissued in 2024.
A practice beyond campaigns.
Mario’s work spans magazines including Vogue, W, i-D, and Document, alongside campaigns and film direction. His photographs are held in London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery. Draw Blood for Proof grew from a wall-based personal archive into a 2004 installation and then a book published by Steidl in 2013.
Still making pictures.
Recent work includes Bad Bunny’s Calvin Klein debut, GapStudio campaigns, and Loro Piana’s visits to places where art and everyday life meet. In 2025, his work also appeared in ABRI MARS’s group exhibition One of One, alongside work by his daughter, photographer Gray Sorrenti.
