Mini bio

How it started.

Marshall grew up in Valley Station, Kentucky, and went on to earn a PhD at UCLA. In an interview, he credited his mother, a trained first-grade teacher, with giving him an early start in learning.

A mentor opened the door.

In his twenties, Marshall followed Paul Hersey to leadership programs and learned by watching him teach. When Hersey became double-booked, Marshall stepped in at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He recalled being ranked first among the speakers, an opportunity that led him into executive education.

Ideas readers could use.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There brought his coaching approach to readers in 2007, examining twenty habits that can hold successful people back. Triggers followed in 2015 with tools for changing everyday behavior. The Earned Life, published in 2022, explored fulfillment and purpose beyond career outcomes.

Passing it on.

Marshall helped create the 100 Coaches community to share what he had learned. Today, fans can find free leadership and coaching resources, courses, articles, videos, and an interactive coaching tool on his website.
