Mini bio

How it started.

Martha grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, learning gardening from her father and cooking and sewing from her mother. After working as a stockbroker, she started a catering business at home in 1976.

The book that opened doors.

Her catering work led to Entertaining in 1982. She expanded into Martha Stewart Living magazine in 1990 and a television series of the same name in 1993, turning household skills into a publishing and broadcasting business.

Rebuilding.

After a 2004 conviction for misleading federal investigators and obstructing an investigation, Martha served five months in prison. She returned to television with The Martha Stewart Show and continued publishing books.

Still teaching.

Fans now find her in cooking collaborations, new books and detailed blog posts about the farm. Her projects also include The Bedford, her Las Vegas restaurant, and Elm Biosciences, co-founded with dermatologist Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali.
