Mini bio
How it started.
Matt grew up in Norwich with a Michelin-starred chef for a dad, but only began cooking in his early twenties. He taught himself through online tutorials and repeated attempts, including plenty of burnt cakes and soggy pastry.
Finding an audience.
After building his confidence, he started Topless Baker to share recipes. Viral videos brought an international audience and opportunities to travel. After four years under that name, he began creating as Matt Adlard.
Teaching the details.
Bake It Better launched in August 2019 because short Instagram videos could not fit all the detail his recipes needed. He relaunched the school in 2023 with two recipe tiers a month. His debut cookbook uses the same idea: learn one bake, then try a more advanced version.
Beyond the home kitchen.
His television work includes judging Christmas Cookie Challenge, Chopped Sweets and Food Network Challenge, hosting Made for Two with the Topless Baker, and serving as a resident judge on Channel 4’s Beat the Chef. In 2026, The Science of Baking brought ingredient chemistry and microscopic images into his teaching.
