Mini bio

How it started.

Matt studied sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Drawing imaginary worlds appealed to him, even though he did not plan to make comics professionally. He went on to work as a concept artist on console games before moving into freelance work.

Building Ctrl+Paint.

In a 2015 PolyPlane interview, Matt traced Ctrl+Paint to a spell of unemployment in 2011. He wanted better tutorials for beginners, so he began making his own. Viewers arrived and bought lessons, and more than two years later he committed to the site full-time. Its short, ordered lessons give fans a way into digital painting without having to piece together a curriculum themselves.

From lessons to game worlds.

His credits span teaching and production art. For Marvel’s Iron Man VR, he designed drones, architecture, weapons and props. He later art-directed Batman: Arkham Shadow. In a 2024 interview, he described studying the older Arkham games and adapting their visual language to the demands of first-person VR.

The Concept Art Playbook pairs Matt’s visual instruction with game designer Ryan Darcey’s briefs. Challenges range from props to city layouts, showing how a design needs to solve a gameplay problem as well as look convincing.
