Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Saint John and raised in Fort Erie, Matty grew up with food memories that later became part of his cookbooks. He told Eater that one of his earliest cooking memories was barbecuing oysters at his grandfather’s home in Prince Edward Island, where summers also meant lobster boils and digging for clams.
The burger and the camera.
As executive chef at Toronto’s Parts & Labour, he found an audience beyond the dining room. A 2013 Burger Wars win brought so many burger orders that a separate P&L Burger shop followed. He kept pitching friends at Vice to appear on Munchies until a producer offered him his own show. His cooking videos helped turn that restaurant following into an international audience.
A world built around food.
His first cookbook arrived in 2018, pairing recipes with memories of growing up and learning to cook in Toronto. He now works across restaurants, books and video, while playing Neil Fak in The Bear and serving as an executive producer. Just a Dash carries his cooking comedy onto Netflix; Pig Pen gives his love of hardcore music a home of its own.
