Before television.
Born in Cleveland and raised outside Philadelphia, Oz studied at Harvard before earning both medical and business degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. His career as a heart surgeon became the foundation for a public life explaining health to wider audiences.

He hosted Discovery’s Second Opinion with Dr. Oz in 2003, where he met guest Oprah Winfrey. He became a recurring health expert on her show in 2004. His own syndicated series, The Dr. Oz Show, followed in 2009 and ran through January 2022.
Books and wider projects.
Alongside television, Oz co-wrote the YOU health books with Michael F. Roizen and wrote Food Can Fix It, which combines nutrition discussion, recipes and meal planning. He also founded the youth health nonprofit HealthCorps in 2003 and co-founded Sharecare.
A public career with scrutiny.
His television work also drew criticism over unproven health products and the overlap between advice and advertising. In 2025, his career moved into federal health administration when he became the head of CMS.
