Mini bio

How it started.

Mike says his wish to become a doctor began at seven, when a doctor treated a deep cut he suffered while exploring a pond. During medical school, catching his first baby helped him find his way into obstetrics and gynecology.

Building a practice.

He earned his MD at Emory in 1993 and completed his OB/GYN residency there in 1997. That year he joined Dr. James Cross in private practice. In his own account of that decision, he describes choosing the chance to serve Cherokee County’s mothers and babies over a faculty position at Emory.

Beyond the exam room.

His public work spans health videos, answers to patient questions, and books. The Eyes Don’t See explores medicine and faith through stories from his work. For Family: A MisMatch Made in Heaven, he teamed up with his wife Ann to tell stories about marriage and parenting from both perspectives.

Finding an online audience.

Fans also know him as @mikelitrelmd on TikTok. By December 2024, reporting described an audience of more than 280,000 followers. His video about smoking cessation attracted coverage beyond the United States, alongside his regular focus on women’s health.
