Mini bio
How it started.
After studying political science at Milan University, Miuccia began designing for the leather goods business founded by her grandfather in 1913. A partnership with entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli helped turn the family business into an international fashion group.
The pieces that changed things.
The black nylon backpack arrived in 1984, bringing a practical material into Prada’s accessories. In 1988, the label launched its first women’s ready-to-wear collection and held its first women’s fashion show in Milan. Miuccia established Miu Miu in 1993, giving another side of her design practice its own home.
A life in art, too.
Miuccia and Bertelli founded Fondazione Prada in 1993. Its program connects art with cinema, architecture, science and other fields. In 2012, The Met placed her work in dialogue with Elsa Schiaparelli’s in Impossible Conversations, including filmed exchanges directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Since 2020, Miuccia has shared Prada’s creative direction with Raf Simons while continuing to lead Miu Miu. A 2025 interview records her saying she is not on social media. Her collections and cultural projects are the clearest way to keep up with her work.
