Mini bio
How it started.
Nala was a shelter kitten when Pookie picked her up and she licked Pookie’s face. Her official story says she was the last of her original group left at the shelter. Pookie brought her home, cared for an infection, and began sharing photos so friends and family back home could watch her grow.
Finding her people.
The Instagram account began in March 2012. Fans came to know Nala’s wide blue eyes, little hats, and love of cardboard boxes. Guinness verified her account as the most followed cat on Instagram in May 2020. Her family uses that audience to encourage shelter adoption and lifelong care for pets.
Beyond the feed.
Nala’s 2020 book pairs previously unseen photos with encouragement and advice about adopting and caring for a pet. Her Youtooz collectible followed in 2021, complete with a removable knitted shark hat. She also inspired Love, Nala, the cat food company co-founded by Pookie, and has become a NAMI ambassador.
