Mini bio

Before Uncle Roger.

Nigel grew up in Kuala Lumpur and started performing stand-up while studying at Northwestern University in the US. In a 2018 interview, he described studying engineering and philosophy and slowly finding his confidence onstage. He later worked as a data scientist in London while continuing to perform, and became a full-time comic in September 2019.

The rice video that changed things.

In July 2020, his Uncle Roger character reacted to a BBC Food egg fried rice tutorial featuring Hersha Patel. The orange polo shirt, outspoken uncle persona and food opinions became his calling card. Nigel told Tatler that the character drew on the opinionated but ultimately kind aunties and uncles he grew up around.

Beyond the reaction videos.

Stand-up has remained part of his work. His debut show Culture Shocked earned a Best Newcomer nomination at the 2019 Edinburgh Comedy Awards. The HAIYAA Special pairs Uncle Roger’s crowd roasts with Nigel’s observations about life and culture; he released the full Boston recording on YouTube in September 2025.

Bringing fans to the table.

He opened FUIYOH! It’s Uncle Roger at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in September 2024, then expanded into London with Kawan by Uncle Roger in 2026. His first cookbook, Don’t Mess Up Your Rice, followed in November 2026, written with Jenn Garbee and featuring a foreword by Gordon Ramsay.
