How it started.
Nigel Ng began doing comedy while studying engineering at Northwestern University. After moving to London, they worked as a data scientist and kept performing at open mics, becoming a full-time comedian in 2019.
The uncle arrives.
When lockdown cancelled live work, Nigel developed Uncle Roger for the internet. A friend sent over a BBC Food fried rice tutorial, and the character’s reaction became a breakout in 2020. Cooking videos gave the grumpy uncle a home, with celebrity chefs regularly facing the verdict.
From screen to table.
The character grew into live stand-up and restaurant projects. Nigel’s first world tour finished in 2024 after selling more than 115,000 tickets across four continents. The HAIYAA Special streams on Hulu. FUIYOH! It’s Uncle Roger operates in Malaysia, while Kawan by Uncle Roger brings a separate restaurant concept to London.
A cookbook for the nieces and nephews.
Don’t Mess Up Your Rice, published on November 3, 2026, pairs Nigel with co-author Jenn Garbee and a foreword by Gordon Ramsay. Its 70 recipes range from fried rice and pad Thai to chicken satay and desserts.
