How it started.

Nirmal grew up in Lahore and began performing at nine. In a 2017 interview, she recalled singing for her family on the stairs before joining her school choir. She won her first singing competition at 12 and later studied psychology at Kinnaird College.

The Coke Studio years.

Her 2016 Coke Studio debut paired her with Jabar Abbas on “Ala Baali,” a love song in Urdu, Arabic and Punjabi, with music directed by Shiraz Uppal. She returned in 2017 for “Jindjaani” with Ali Hamza, a contemporary folk duet that incorporates “Jhaanjar Phabdi Naan.”

A voice beyond the studio.

She sang “Raunaq-e-Aashiqui” for Punjab Nahi Jaungi and earned a 2018 Lux Style Awards nomination. Her solo song “Dil Chala” followed in 2020. More recently, she has collaborated with Aashir Wajahat on “Dheema Dheema” and written and composed “Kamla Ishq.”
