Mini bio

Growing up in the water.

Ocean grew up on Oahu, Hawaii. In her own account, both parents were swimmers and divers, and childhood time around wildlife helped her pay attention to animal behavior. She says the gap between the sharks she observed and their frightening media image drew her toward conservation.

Finding an audience.

A 2013 GoPro video of Ocean swimming with a great white shark brought her early attention. Her work with photographer and husband Juan Oliphant combines underwater imagery with advocacy. Through One Ocean Diving, she also brings visitors into the water and teaches about sharks.

Books and the screen.

Her 2019 book What You Should Know About Sharks explores shark behavior and human interactions, with photographs by Oliphant. She also appears in Saving Jaws and played shark conservationist Lily O’Neil in a 2017 episode of Hawaii Five-0. Netflix’s 2025 documentary Shark Whisperer follows her advocacy and the debate over her methods.

The debate around her work.

Her close-contact shark videos have drawn criticism over risks to people and animals, a tension explored in Shark Whisperer. In November 2026, Civil Beat reported former employees’ allegations of workplace abuse and unpaid training at One Ocean Diving. Ramsey and Oliphant denied physical and verbal abuse; the report also covered announced changes to training pay and non-compete contracts.
