Mini bio
How it started.
Before the podcasts and Pokémon cards, Pat worked in architecture. He put his LEED exam study notes online, creating the site that became Green Exam Academy. After losing his architecture job in 2008, he turned that knowledge into a study guide people could buy.
Sharing the experiment.
Pat launched Smart Passive Income in 2008 to share what he was learning about online business. Public accounts of his experiments, strategies and income became part of its identity. The SPI podcast followed in 2010, giving listeners interviews and lessons for building their own businesses.
Making things fans can use.
His books include Will It Fly?, about testing business ideas, Superfans, about building lasting audience relationships, and Lean Learning, about applying the information you need. He also co-invented the SwitchPod with videographer Caleb Wojcik; their tripod launched on Kickstarter in 2019.
A new chapter.
Pat’s Pokémon work grew into Deep Pocket Monster and Card Party, the collector event he started in 2023. In September 2026 he announced that Liz Wilcox had bought SPI from him and business partner Matt Gartland, with the transaction completed that April. He remains connected as an advisor and monthly podcast guest while putting more time into Pokémon content and storytelling for families.
